Does Reddit really drive AI visibility?
Yes, measurably. In our category measurements Reddit was the most-cited source in every single run — AI assistants cite community threads about who is good more readily than they cite the businesses themselves. The lever is being genuinely discussed there, not posting adverts.
Updated 22 July 2026
Ask an AI assistant where to buy something and, when it searches the live web to answer, watch what it cites. In our July 2026 measurement of UK cigar retail, across five separate measurements totalling 1,479 answers, Reddit was the most-cited source in every single one — cited more often than any merchant's own website, in a category where the merchants have every commercial reason to be the authority.
Why assistants trust a forum
When an assistant retrieves mid-answer, it is hunting for exactly the thing a buying question needs: a comparative, experience-based judgement. "Which of these shops is actually good?" is answered badly by any one shop's website — every shop says it is good — and answered well by a thread where forty enthusiasts argue about it. Reddit threads are dense, comparative, dated, and written by people with no stake in the answer. That is citation gold, and the engines' behaviour shows they know it.
Behind Reddit in our data sat a consistent cluster of the same species: enthusiast blogs and community sites — the hobbyist web, not the commercial one.
The uncomfortable implication
The sources that decide your AI visibility are largely ones you do not control. A brand can perfect its own site — worth doing, it is the readable half — and still lose the citation war to a rival that a community keeps recommending to itself.
What to do about it (and what not to)
Do not astroturf. Fake threads and planted recommendations are against Reddit's rules, routinely detected by communities that are professionally suspicious, and a brand-safety fire when caught. One exposed sock-puppet costs more visibility than a hundred honest mentions earn.
Do:
- Be present as yourself. Communities generally welcome merchants who answer questions, flag stock honestly and take criticism publicly. Being a named, helpful participant earns organic mentions.
- Give the community something to discuss — a genuinely useful guide, transparent pricing, an unusual product line. Threads about you cannot exist unless there is something to say.
- Fix the failure they mention. When threads recommend rivals over you, the reasons stated in the thread — price, range, delivery — are unusually honest market research.
- Support the enthusiast sites in your category with access and information; they are the second-most-cited species, and unlike Reddit, they respond to outreach.
The pattern generalises: AI assistants have effectively appointed communities as their expert witnesses. The way to win a witness's testimony is to deserve it.
