How do you get cited by Perplexity?

Perplexity retrieves and cites on nearly every answer, so citations go to pages it can fetch that most directly answer the question asked: readable without JavaScript, one clear claim near the top, and corroborated by the community and editorial sources it also trusts. It is the engine where on-page work pays fastest.

Updated 22 July 2026

Perplexity is the odd one out among the big assistants: it searches the live web for almost every answer and shows its citations. That transparency makes it the best engine to study — you can see exactly who earned each answer — and the fastest to win, because its answers depend on what is fetchable today rather than what a model memorised last year.

How Perplexity differs from the others

In our four-engine measurement, Perplexity behaved distinctly: it named brands at materially different rates from ChatGPT and Gemini on identical questions, and it was the most retrieval-led of the four. For one heavily cited merchant, adding Perplexity to the measurement shifted the brand's mention mechanism visibly toward "retrieved" — its answers come with receipts.

The practical meaning: with Perplexity, the fixable half of visibility is most of the game. A brand with weak trained-memory presence can still be cited this afternoon if its pages are the best fetchable answer to the question.

What earns a citation

Perplexity's citations in our measurements went to two species of page:

Community and editorial judgements — Reddit threads, enthusiast blogs, comparison articles — for the "which is best" half of a question. You influence these the slow, honest way.

Directly useful merchant pages — for the factual half: what you stock, whether you deliver, what it costs. This is where your own site competes, and where the patterns are concrete:

  1. Answer the question in the first screenful. A page titled and opened with the buyer's actual question — then a complete, self-contained answer — gives the engine a passage it can lift and attribute. Brochure openings ("Welcome to…") give it nothing.
  2. Be fetchable. Server-rendered HTML, no block on PerplexityBot or Perplexity-User, fast responses. Perplexity cannot cite what it cannot read — check your crawler policy.
  3. One page per question beats one page for everything. Buying guides, delivery pages, and comparison pages each win their own query; a single long page dilutes them all.
  4. Dates and specifics. Perplexity favours current, concrete pages; prices, dates and named products outperform vague evergreen copy.

Measuring it honestly

Because Perplexity cites nearly everything, your citation rate there is a clean, checkable signal — ours is measured and published per engine. But remember the engines disagree: a strong Perplexity position says little about Claude or Gemini. Treat it as your retrieval scoreboard, not your whole score.

Common questions

Why does Perplexity cite my competitor's site but not mine?
Usually fetchability or directness: their page answers the asked question in a liftable passage and yours doesn't, or their site lets Perplexity's crawlers in and yours blocks them — often via a CDN bot rule nobody chose deliberately. Both are checkable in minutes, and both are the fast kind of fix.
Is Perplexity worth optimising for given its smaller user base?
Yes, for two reasons: its answers are the purest test of whether your pages are citable — work that transfers to every retrieval-led surface including ChatGPT search and AI Overviews — and its visible citations make it the one engine where you can audit exactly why you won or lost an answer.
Does Perplexity use Reddit as much as other engines?
In our measurements Perplexity cited community sources heavily, consistent with the pattern across engines — Reddit was the most-cited source in every measurement we ran. For 'which is best' questions it leans on communities; for factual merchant questions it cites the merchant pages that answer most directly.
